Selank is a synthetic heptapeptide developed at the Institute of Molecular Genetics of the Russian Academy of Sciences. It is an analogue of the endogenous immunomodulatory tetrapeptide tuftsin, extended with a stabilizing sequence (Pro-Gly-Pro) to increase resistance to enzymatic degradation.
Research on Selank, conducted primarily in Russia, has examined anxiolytic (anti-anxiety) activity, effects on learning and memory, and immunomodulatory properties. It has been described in the Russian literature as having been evaluated in clinical research for anxiety disorders.
Selank is not approved by the FDA or other Western regulatory agencies and remains an investigational compound outside of the Russian research context.
Proposed mechanisms from preclinical research include modulation of the GABAergic and serotonergic systems, effects on brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) expression, and influence on the metabolism of enkephalins by inhibiting their enzymatic breakdown, which may prolong their activity.
