Selank is a lab-made peptide (a short chain of seven amino acids). Selank does not lock onto one single receptor. Research has looked at how it works with the brain's GABA system (GABA is a calming chemical messenger that quiets nerve signals). Studies reported that Selank changed how GABA binds and shifted the activity of genes tied to this calming system in nerve-like cells grown in the lab [1]. Because it is related to tuftsin, it also keeps some immune-affecting and nerve-affecting properties [2].
Early animal work has tested Selank in anxiety and stress setups. One study reported that Selank boosted the anxiety-easing effect of diazepam (a common anti-anxiety drug) in rats under ongoing mild stress [3]. Other rodent work reported it eased the distressing signs of morphine withdrawal about as well as diazepam [4]. These are behavior results in animals.
Researchers have looked at how Selank affects brain messenger chemicals, reporting changes in how the brain handles serotonin (a mood-related messenger) in rats [5], and have used brain-mapping methods to study Selank and a related peptide, Semax [2]. These studies explore how it works rather than prove any result.
