Snap-8 is proposed, in cosmetic-science literature, to mimic a segment of SNAP-25 and thereby compete with native SNAP-25 for a position in the SNARE complex that drives synaptic-vesicle docking and fusion. By interfering with SNARE-complex assembly, the peptide is theorized to modestly attenuate catecholamine and acetylcholine release at the neuromuscular interface, reducing the muscle contractions associated with expression lines.
This mechanism is analogous in concept to how botulinum neurotoxin disrupts SNARE proteins, though the proposed peptide effect is far weaker and its relevance after topical application is a subject of debate given peptide skin-permeation constraints. The mechanism is largely inferential and based on the SNAP-25 sequence relationship rather than on extensive controlled human data.
