Oxytocin is a nonapeptide (nine-amino-acid) hormone and neuropeptide synthesized primarily in the paraventricular and supraoptic nuclei of the hypothalamus and released from the posterior pituitary. Its structure includes a characteristic disulfide bridge forming a six-residue ring, and it differs from the related peptide vasopressin by only two amino acids.

Physiologically, oxytocin is classically associated with uterine smooth-muscle contraction during parturition and the milk-ejection reflex during lactation. Beyond these roles, decades of neuroscience research have examined its involvement in social recognition, pair bonding, trust, and stress modulation.

Oxytocin is one of the most thoroughly characterized peptide hormones, with an extensive literature spanning endocrinology, reproductive biology, and behavioral neuroscience. It is supplied here as a research reagent.
