DSIP (Delta Sleep-Inducing Peptide) is a small natural brain signaling molecule (a peptide made of nine building blocks). It was first found in the blood of rabbits while they were asleep. Researchers use it as a tool to study sleep and how the brain sends signals.
Reviews note that scientists have not clearly identified a single main target that DSIP locks onto in cells. Instead, it seems to have wide-ranging, gentle effects across several of the brain's signaling systems, affecting brain electrical activity, brain chemical levels, and hormone output [1][2].
Early animal work reported that DSIP encourages deep, slow-wave sleep in rabbits, rats and mice, with stronger effects on dreaming sleep (REM) reported in cats [1]. Small human studies gave synthetic DSIP into a vein to people with insomnia or shifted sleep schedules, and reported effects on how well sleep held together and on other sleep measures in some people [2][3].
Reviews summarize studies of DSIP related to daily body-clock and movement patterns, hormone levels and stress responses, and its reported effect on how certain drugs act and on withdrawal from them [1][2].
Much of the DSIP research is decades old, done in animals, or based on small and varied groups of people with inconsistent results, and no clear cell target has been agreed on. Reconstitute with bacteriostatic or sterile water to prepare stock solutions, store reconstituted material at 2-8°C for short-term use, aliquot to avoid repeated freeze-thaw cycles, and keep working solutions protected from light.
