BPC-157 (Body Protection Compound-157) is a man-made peptide (a short chain of building blocks called amino acids) made of 15 of those blocks. Its sequence copies part of a protein found in human stomach fluid. In published studies it is described as a stable stomach-related peptide that researchers have looked at mainly as a compound that may help protect and repair tissue in early lab and animal testing [1][3].
Studies suggest BPC-157 does not act on one single target. Instead, researchers have looked at how it affects signals the body uses to grow new blood vessels and to trigger repair. Experiments have examined its effect on the VEGF/VEGFR2 pathway (a signaling system that helps build new blood vessels), the nitric-oxide system (chemical signals that help blood vessels relax and widen), and its interaction with growth factors and the FAK-paxillin pathway (signals that help cells move and attach) in cultured cells and animal tissue [2][6]. In rodent healing studies, tissue-staining tests reported changes in markers linked to blood-vessel growth (VEGF, CD34, FVIII) rather than a direct effect on isolated cells [2].
Most research has looked at healing of soft tissue in the muscles and joints. Reviews of rodent studies describe reported improvements in how well the tissue worked, its structure, and its strength after injury to tendons, ligaments, muscle, and bone [1][3]. One rat study looked at early recovery of the Achilles tendon where it attaches to bone after it was cut [5], and review articles have gathered together the animal-based sports-medicine research [3][4].
Other animal reviews have summarized reported effects on inflammation (swelling and irritation), pain, and the lining of the gut across a range of animal studies [6][3].
Almost all BPC-157 evidence comes from early studies (in test tubes and in rodents). Published reviews clearly note that there are no well-designed human trials, and they state that its safety and how well it works in people are not established.
